My internet on only my PC is slow

For some reason since moving house, my internet on just my PC is incredibly slow on an intermittent basis.

If I look at how many bytes are sent and received, there's currently 4 million received and 946 thousand sent...

I say it's intermittent, because sometimes I'll unplug my USB adapter and plug it back in and it works absolutely fine. Every other device in the house, including my phone in the exact same spot as my PC, has super fast wifi.

I've also read other threads and I don't have any AMD components so it's not that that's throttling my internet. I'm using a TP Link adapter, and I've tried two different adapters, both have the same issue.

I've tried updating my drivers, no luck.

What's gone wrong?!

UPDATE: I'm now having trouble connecting to my wifi in the first place, but if I connect to my tethered phone it's fine. The wifi I want to connect to is Sky. In my previous home, I connected to a different Sky router with no issues so I don't believe it's a compatibility issue.

okay just to clear up a couple of things first.

The number of bytes being sent or received (although useful information) is not the key indicator of your ISP broadband speed.

The second things is, that statement about AMD components somehow throttling your internet. Just abandon that thought process. That's some Donald Trump style fake news right there.

You are connecting on Wifi right? So your gonna have to expect some drops in signal, changeable speeds and connectivity issues. Most people experience this.
Run Speedtest or something and tell us the results. That way we can see your speeds. Ideally you want to use a cable connected to a laptop/desktop and connect it directly to your Skyhub, then you will get your true speeds. Your wifi speeds will be slower than this. And if you have your PC in another room, upstairs lets say, away from your Skyhub, then you have to expect drops in speed. These are the drawbacks of wireless connectivity.

With all due respect I've acknowledged that devices in exactly the same location don't have speed issues. The problem I'm having isn't just streaming in 720 p rather than 1080, it's struggling to stream 144p. It basically doesn't work, with only the basics of an internet connection. Yesterday and the day before after posting this, no issues. I log onto tonight, back to square one, barely usable.

Anyway, what is your download/speed. Get this by running Speedtest, on one of the devices you know works. Then get a laptop and wire it to the router and test again.

The information your giving isn't the info we need to trouble shoot this.

Also, if you know already great, if you don't then ring your ISP and ask What is your package? What do you get with it. As in 60gbs, usage, 20mb down/10mb up.
PLease describe the service you get.

Whether or not you can stream, is almost irrelevant for now.

Download/Upload on speedtest is 43.05 Mbps download and 17.75 Mbps upload, sat exactly where my PC is on my phone.

I can't wire into router as I currently don't have an ethernet. But my phone is getting the speeds we were advertised (as does my Xbox, iPad and my girlfriend's Laptop from the same place as my PC).

We're on sky fibre unlimited so get unlimited usage, we were advertised speeds of between 40 - 60MB (can't remember exactly I'm afraid).

The weird thing is how intermittent the speed is on my PC. It's not that it goes quickly from being fast to slow, but rather for two days it's absolutely fine and then the next day it's awful. Could it be that something's interfering with the wireless adapter?

No worries. I can appreciate and fully understand the frustration.

So what that tells me is, firstly you have speeds capable of playing back 1440p res vids. But just on the borderline.

It also tells me, at least I'm inferring, that you have multiple devices connected. How many roughly.

Also, can I infer that you use a wireless dongle of some sort to connect on your PC.

I'd say whats happening, is that you have close to 10 devices connected (even if it isn't 10 or just 5, it will matter). And also the standard 2.4ghz bandwitdh that your router operates on is congested. This happens frequently, and sometimes one device or another may get bumped off. I know it happens in my own house with just two people. But we each have a laptop/desktop, phone and tablets to connect.

If your router is modern you may be able to use the 5ghz band. It's much cleaner, and allows faster wifi speeds.
See if your router displays two addresses. One is normally lets say 'Linksys 2014 ' but the 5ghz will be called something like 'Linksys 2014 5G' instead. If you have that option it may help.

On the intermittent connectivity from the PC wirelessly. Have you tried finding a more up to date driver for the usb dongle? that may help too.

Hi Keith, I've just checked Sky's network admin page and I currently have three devices connected to my wifi; two iPads and my Computer. Connection on both iPads is perfect. Connection on my PC, awful again!

I do have 5GHz on my router, but I'm not convinced my dongle is able to utilise it. The weird thing is I'm not seeing Sky 2G and Sky 5G as two seperate channels. Could it be it's auto merged them in the settings, only letting 5G devices access the 5G?

This might explain some of the issue as I believe the rest of my devices are 5G capable.

Regarding drivers, I uninstalled all the drivers for my dongle and upon trying to reinstall them found out that there isn't actually a Windows 10 supported driver... God knows how the drivers worked in the first place ( i bought the dongle when I had Windows 7 installed then subsequently updated to Windows 10), but I'm now running it with just the default Realtek Driver in the PC, which probably isn't helping matters.

Yes, this appears to be exactly the problem. And also, the dongle not having a Win10 driver 'could' be playing a part here too. Does it say on manufacturers website if it's Win10 Compatible? You might try pop them off an email and ask. Just to be sure. You can try installing the Win 7 driver, you will have to do so as an administrator to make sure it's installed. You can do this by right clicking on the setup app, and choose run as administrator.

The other thing you could try, and I have it myself, so can vouch that it works really well, is a powerline set up. They are cheap as chips and easy as pie to set up.

You basically have two units. One is plugged in at a wall socket close to your router, and then you use an ethernet cable to connect it to the back of your router. Then you put the other unit in a socket close to your PC, and wire that to the ethernet port on your PC. The signal from your router is transmitted through the elictrical cabling in your house. It gives great speeds, but the added advantage being it's not wirelss. Speeds are consistent and fast with no drops. I love it. I can put my pc in any room in any room in the house and just plug the adaptor into the wall socket, and hey presto, instant high speed, and it also you means you don't have to run a long CAT5 cable through walls or ceilings.

On the 5G wireless, and the standard 2G, that's unusual that they both don.t display. It should. You could ask sky for more info on it just to be sure.
