You can drop in NVMe PCIe based M.2 SSD's or SATA based M.2 SSD's into your laptop. You should be good to go with M.2 2280 versions of any SSD. Just make sure you're on the latest BIOS update for your laptop's motherboard before dropping in the SSD and reinstall the OS from scratch.

It supports "SATA NVMe," which is a little confusing, according to page 77 of the service manual. At the very least, a SATA m.2 SSD should work, maybe an NVMe m.2.

You also do not need to update the BIOS unless the current version does not support your upgrade (and unless an update will add support).
