my laptop is only showing solid colored screens

I have an HP laptop that suddenly just quit working. When I turn it on the screen shows up solid red then changes to another color, I think blue, then another and another. It rotates through all these color screens eventually going through half black half white and then lined screens before starting the whole cycle over again. I know very little about computers. What would be the cause of this and how might I fix it. (the cheaper the better!)
