Question my laptop keeps doing on and off

my laptop keeps doing on and off and idk why. The laptop is still on, the battery is still charging, but the cylinder symbol thingy is off. My screen is just off and I don't know what to do. My laptop is windows 8 and I'm a student who needs to submit my research. Please help me asap. I don't know what to do..

Please mention the make and model of your laptop and it's SKU. If your laptop has a battery that's external and can be removed, try doing so, then connect to the wall with your power brick to power your laptop. If the laptop powers up without the battery, it can mean a couple of things.
1| Your battery needs replacing
2| The power delivery circuitry for the battery(courtesy of the motherboard is compromised)
or
3| 1 + 2.
