It is possible that you didn't set your speaker as the default speaker.

In your notification panel, right click the speaker > playback device. Right click the speaker you want and set it to default device. It should be High Definition Audio Device

If this doesn't work, then go to device manager. Uninstall and reinstall the device.

If you have a mac (may be the same for PC, but i'm not sure) there is a sensor in the headphone jack that tells the computer to turn the speakers off when there is headphones plugged in, and sometimes that sensor gets jammed and the computer thinks there is headphones plugged in when there isn't.

Solution: Get a tooth pick or something and stick it in there to un-jam the sensor.

Thank you for the suggested solution of "[un-jamming] the sensor". As soon as I did that, my sound returned to my internal speakers!!!

Best answer. I tried a dozen other things and this did the truck. I used a safety pin and it turned on immediately after wiggling it around a little.

Very very helpful. I did all the maintenance and uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling, but none of those worked till I used the old reliable toothpick. Thank you very much.

This problem drove me crazy for two days solid, so I wanted to share the solution that I found. I recently installed Windows 10 and I think this may have affected my sound settings. So what I did was went under device manger and opened the sound/video game controllers and uninstalled both (High definition audio device and Intel(R) Audio display. Then I did a restart and an update. BAM, my problem was fixed. So now my speakers work and then when I plug in my headphones my speakers shut off and sound just comes out of my headphones.
Hope this helps you.
