My laptop won't shut down when the screen is black and when I press the power button nothing happens

I had turned my laptop on and then the power button turned on but the screen was black, when I pressed the power button to turn it off again it won't turn off!!

It doesn't turn off if you press and hold the power button?
I suggest resetting the laptop, unplug the power adapter, remove battery then press and hold the power button for ~30 seconds. Put battery back in, plug power in and attempt to restart. If still nothing on the display, shine a flashlight at the screen, if you can see a faint image the most likely thing would be the backlight power inverter has failed. If no image can be seen at all try connecting to an external monitor through VGA or HDMI and see if anything on the external monitor
