Question My lighting in my case flickered under load so...

So I was using a thermaltake smart series 700 watt PSU for about 2 months before adding an extra GPU to my system (1070 PNY, +2070 HP OEM) after about 4 days I noticed that my lighting in my case had started to flicker, (brief almost instantaneous dimming of the RGB strips and the lighting on the new GPU), this only happens when I have the two GPUS under load (F@H if it matters) or running Furmark. I immediately suspected the PSU but on checking the computers power draw I found myself drawing no more than 496w on a spartan kill-a-watt knock-off I had lying around. This seemed wierd but I went ahead and bought an EVGA 850 watt GQ series semi-modular PSU and replaced the TermalTake PSU this morning. The flicker is either completely gone or is now a figment of my paranoid mind (I swear I still see it but my roommate doesn't).

Sorry for the ramble, but here is my question: was it the PSU or could it be something else that a better PSU is now masking?
