One day, my usb adapter stopped connecting to my 5GHz wifi signal. I started manually trying to connect it but it didn't seem to work. Do I need a new usb adapter because this one is faulty?

Not sure about the full scope of what you attempted via "manually trying to connect" (e.g., wired connection perhaps).

However, in any case, more information is needed.

Make & Model USB adapter? Does it feel overly warm or even hot? I have had a couple fail on me and the "heat" is often quite noticeable.

Do other wireless devices use/detect 5 GHz?

I would start by downloading the applicable wireless adapter drivers and reconfiguring the adapter as applicable to your wireless network.

Do you have any other 5 GHz network devices you can temporarily relocate to host computer's location. Could be interference.

Try using an USB extension cable to move/raise the USB adapter up and about. Adapter may be degrading and just no longer as sensitive as it once was.
Get the adapter clear of wires, furniture, and other possible sources of interference.

Try another known working USB adapter if available: borrow from another computer.

Try the existing adapter on another computer.

Determine if the problem stays with the current computer or follows the USB adapter.

My wifi router is downstairs so that might be the problem. If you would like to see my adapter I can send a picture to you. I've borrowed a wifi card from someone for a day and it could detect the 5GHz wifi signal, so I think it might just be my adapter.

In agreement with The Paladin.

Those adapters are made as inexpensively as possible with little or minimal QA.

Your efforts so far very much seem to narrow the problem down to being the adapter.

Do recommend that the adapter make be the same manufacturer as your router if at all possible.

Otherwise the differing manufacturers will just blame the other guy....
