first of all im 100% sure this is a software issue and not a hardware one. i've tried all 3 of the different mics on my phone and they all worked
so a few days ago my headset (g332 se if it matters) stopped working out of nowhere so i tried some dodgy cheap headset off amazon and it worked for about a day then stopped working out of nowhere again. so earlier i tried some standard apple earbuds and they worked for about half an hour. so far ive tried:
  • restarting my laptop (acer nitro 5 an515-52)
  • restarting windows audio.msc
  • fully reinstalling windows from a usb stick
  • running windows updates
  • checked my control panel options
any ideas?

Not sure if this is what you mean in your Control Panel options: You could try opening up the Device Manager in Control Panel and checking the settings for your headset and mic devices. Check the Power Management tab and make sure the computer can't turn the mic off to conserve power. Same for any other device that might be involved, e.g. bluetooth for earbuds, wireless devices, even usb. I always go through every device listed since I don't trust Windows not to power devices off.

i changed my power setting from power saver to balanced and now i can use my laptop mic with a headset though my headset mic doesnt seem to work. this is good enough but if you have any suggestions on how to make my headset mic work ill take them

You may need to keep going, using the Device Manager in Control panel to find every device where Windows can shut the power off. Somewhere buried among all those devices you will probably find the device setting for your headset and if you disable the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" your headset mic may come back on. Or at least try changing the Power setting to High Performance, since Balanced just doesn't do enough.

the laptop mic and the headset mic are listed as the same device (microphone array (realtek high definition audio))
