My mic only has static when muted

I have this headset

and its great in every way including the mic, but when i mute it it makes a static noise, but theres absolutely none when its active, does anyone know why this happens or if i can fix it?

The static you are hearing isn't the mic, it's your sound card. Only way to get rid of that is to buy a sound card or DAC (same thing but a DAC sits outside the PC).

No im pretty sure thats not it, i used to have a logitech g35 and it didnt have any static when it was muted. Plus the static goes away completely when i have my mic on.

That's actually kinda funny. The logitech g35 is a USB based headset and uses it's own internal sound card. The Game One you now have is a 3.5mm and uses your computer's sound card. Now I'm certain it's your sound card.

The advantage to your new headset is that you can pair it with a much better sound card than what can be built into a headset. Right now, it probably sound allot worse than if you have a quality sound card or DAC.

Ok that makes sense thanks, but do you know why static is onyl there when muted? why is there none when its active?

It's probably because the impedance is lowered when the headset isn't in use and thus brings out the electromagnetic interference you are getting from your sound card.
