I recently bought this quad HD IPS Dell monitor for my father, who's an amateur photographer. Its max resolution is (of course) 2560 x 1440. However, the resolution slider only goes to 2048 x 1080 for whatever reason. Some data about his setup:
Windows 7
Intel DZ68DB motherboard
Nvidia GT 730 (whose specs sheet says it supports quad HD resolution)
Latest Nvidia driver installed
Monitor connected to the gfx board via HDMI
There is a second, 1080p monitor. I tried disabling it in the resolution screen to see if the issue was related to having multiple monitors. No luck
I then tried switching the GT 730 for a GTX 560 I had lying around, connecting the monitor via HDMI using a mini-HDMI adapter. Still, same issue.
I saw another thread with a similar issue in which the person fixed it by getting a new, high-quality HDMI 1.4 cable. Do you think this could be the problem here as well? The cable my father's using is probably generic.
Do you think upgrading to Windows 10 would possibly help? He's reticent to do it because one of his client companies has a system that only works in Internet Explorer 8 (which probably doesn't run on W10), and he needs to be able to access this system to receive jobs from them. He'd still have my mom's computer (also W7) for this, but he'd rather keep the W7 on his machine for convenience.
Lastly, I tried setting custom resolution of 2560 x 1440 via Nvidia control panel, both with 60 Hz and 50 Hz (as per the aforementioned thread I read). While it seems to work, the image gets quite fuzzy and the text unclear, and using the monitor's own menu via its buttons reveals the monitor still thinks it's running at 2048 x 1080 (it will list that as the "current" resolution versus the "maximum" of 2560 x 1440).
