My monitor resolution is 1024 X 768, So 9600 Gt 1 gb or 9800 Gt 512 mb

I know the resolution is fine..........but what about the shader quality, Shadow quality?

i have a core 2 duo @ 2.20 ghz
1 gb ram......

The 9800GT 512MB will be better at your resolution and you can turn on more details. You will not gain from the extra ram on the 9600GT 1GB.

Yes, the 9800GT is better, the extra memory makes no difference.
What would make a difference is adding another gig of system ram. 2gb is about the minimum you want to have for running current games. OCing the CPU would be a good idea as well.

For that specific game the cards will do well at your resolution, not max settings, but fairly high. The problem will be your CPU as GTA4 is very processor intensive. Like I said earlier overclocking the processor is a good idea. If your motherboard allows for such it should OC easily and well, probably up to 3 ghz just on the stock cooler.

If you want a card that will be great for your resolution and last you a long while you may want to pay slightly more for an HD5750/HD4850/GTS 250.

The HD5670 is also very low power so you may not need to replace your PSU for that one. Also there are two versions of the 9800GT. The older one uses a fair amount of power and requires a PCIe power connector while the newer version is slightly underclocked but uses much less power and doesn't need a connector.
What is your current PSU?

If the 9800GT is one of the newer versions without the power connector than even a crappy 450w should be able to handle it. The HD5670 as well.
As for lagging it depends on the game and the settings you are trying to use. At your resolution the 9800GT should let you use high settings in most games but some will become choppy if you try to max AA and such. Also your processor is a bit weak like I said earlier which will be a problem in the more CPU intensive games.

Don't worry 9800GT 512MB is better than 9600Gt in EVERY aspect(performance related).

Though you need to change your PSU.

You'll need to game on XP otherwise your RAM won't suffice.

Let me guess, your monitor is VGA, and the video card is using DVI. Easy solution for that is a dvi to vga adapter, end of problem. Any one telling you a monitor won't be compatible with a new video card because it only connects through VGA shouldn't be working with computers.

Usually graphic cards come with a DVI-to-VGA dongle, though I would try to find out before purchasing one. Otherwise, they are pretty cheap to get elsewhere.

It sure does. I've tried it before on my gf's XFX 9800GT 512mb and used the included DVI to VGA adapter on her 19" Acer monitor.
