my monitor supports 72hz but I can't change it from more than 60hz

Hi i have a viewsonic vx2270 series 1080p monitor that supports 72hz but in windows it only shows 60hz and " hide modes that this monitor cant support " is also greyed out. I even checked in the nvidia control panel its stuck at 60hz. I have a gtx 1070 and I use a single link dvi cable. is the dvi cable causing the cap at 60hz?

vx2270 can only run 60Hz @1080p.
If you want 72Hz, set it down to 1024x768.
