You will want to remove all other HDD and SSDs and only have the NVMe drive attached to install Windows 10 onto it.

Have you tried clearing the CMOS yet? Some boards have a set of motherboard pins to jump and some require you to remove the battery. Check in your manual.

Note: when i put this into a sata adaptor, it reads fine.

Should i just forget the motherboards' built-in nvme socket?

Not NVMe.

NVMe is a type of SSD.
SATA is also a type of SSD.

SSD = Solid State Drive.
