My mouse and keyboard suddenly stopped working...(new build)

Hey guys, my keyboard and mouse, both wireless, suddenly stopped working on my new build. I tried a wired USB keyboard and also tried plugging it into a PS2 with an adapter and it doesn't work. It seems that there is no power going to the wired keyboard because its lights do not light. Also, this is probably unrelated, but my ethernet port also stopped working suddenly (but this happened a few hours before my mouse and keyboard stopped working. Any ideas? Please note, I cannot get into BIOS because my PC doesn't recognize my hitting "del" and I cannot do anything in the OS either...

Things work until they don't.

You have lost two "ports" on your motherboard. Presuming this new build is only a few hours old, its unlikely to be a PSU issue and is most likely a mobo issue.

I guess I'd take it out of the case and try running it outside, hoping I bent or shorted something out in assembly.

You'll be taking it out of the case anyhow.

by the way, I just realized this happened after I hit 'F6' in my BIOS, which loads all safety defaults. I did this because my ethernet was not working--maybe this casued it?

possibly. try using an actual PS2 mobo if you have one and see if that works. It'd be kinda strange to have a feature on a BIOS that completely locks the computer.

All I have is the USB to PS2 adapter...is that inherently different than a PS2 keyboard? Also, do you think if I unplug the machine and pull out the mobo battery overnight it would reset the BIOS to factory defaults and fix it?

PS, the light on my 3.5" card reader drive also went off so I assume it's just a loss of power that happened to all USB drives (maybe this is what happened to the ethernet too...although it would be strange since that happened before...while my keyboard and mouse were still working until I did the safety default thing in BIOS)

yeah, it sounds more and more like something on the MOBO. try taking it out of the case and hooking everything up on a cardboard sheet and see if everything will run. If not, I'm sad to say but start looking for an RMA.

You don't think taking out the battery is worth a shot? (doesn't this restore BIOS to factory default?)...I'm not sure I see the poitn in breadboarding the mobo since it worked perfectly well an hour ago so it's unlikely to be a random short that would be fixed by taking it out, right?

also, it seems unlikely that it is a pure hardware problem whe nthe keyboard and mouse malfunction happened immediately after the "safety defaulting" of the BIOS. I am reluctant to RMA until I know for sure otherwise the place at which I bought it will send it right back and I will lose shipping costs and a restocking fee for the other one I'd get.

Turn off your PSU, and unplug it's AC plug. Move your 'cmos reset' to the 'reset' position, wait a few seconds, then move it back. This usually resets your bios back to factory. Plug your PSU's AC power back in, turn it back on, RTFM if this is unclear.

If it works, well and good. If not, start taking the MB out of the case and test with the bare minimum. Could be the PSU that has failed... I believe that there is a troubleshooting sticky on the website to follow.

If you have a usb to ps2 adapter, it's the same as a ps2 keyboard/mouse. You can try removing the mobo battery for ~10 seconds, then replacing and reboot. That will restore your bios.

If you can get your hands on a ps2 keyboard and mouse, try that. The adapter could be bad. If they don't work, I'd RMA the board.

YEAAAAAAAAH!!! OK...so Itook out the battery overnight and then I put everything back in, started, frantically hit DEL on both my bluetooth keyboard and trhe Dell corded keyboard plugged into the PS2 port via the adapter. The corded keyboard is not working for some reason (maybe hte adapter is old and crappy I don't know... BUT the bluetooth logitech keyboard worked and I am IN BIOS WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

BUT...bad news is when I hit the power button of my PC, it turned on for like 2 seconds then turned off, then turned on for 2 seconds, then turned off, and then finally turned on normally. This was with me only pressing the power button once. Does anyone know what this means?

Also, should I enable "legacy" support of USB keyboard and mouse (and also of USB mass storage?). I am not sure if this is what caused my issue or not but I'm not sure what the "legacy" portion of this means...

If you aren't getting stopped in the BIOS, you can leave legacy disabled. It generally deals with older hardware. You can read up on it here

I think "legacy support" for USB should have no effect when you are in BIOS or in Windows. But it can affect anything "DOS-like". This can include things like the boot option screen on rebooting after a BSOD, command prompt windows, etc.

As for the go-stop-go-stop-go . . . check the manufacturer's forum for comments. Some mobos will loop like that if they are not comfortable with the settings they tried on that attempt.
