I have the OCZ GameXStream 700 WATT. Let me tell you, the volts per rail are strong! I'm talking about a steady 12.4V on the 12V rail! LOL! However, my OCZ GameXStream 600 WATT was a little too powerful and caused my computer to reboot randomly. Whenever you get your power supply, I would suggest you test the volts with a volt meter just to make sure. As for as RAID goes. I have yet to try it. The two 160s I have, have different operating systems.

And WTH? Get the 7200.10 instead of the 7200.9. Uh, last time I checked, 9 was greater than 1 buddy

The P5B doesn't have RAID capability where as the P5B Deluxe and the P5B Delixe w/ WIFI do. Just in case in the near future, you wish to do RAID 0 or RAID 1.

Monitors... how much are you willing to spend? LOL! I got my Samsung SyncMaster 940BW for $215 after tax (special Best Buy deal) It's a 19" WS with 5ms GTG. No ghosting at all and no dead pixels. Very vibrant and awesome in games. I've played F.E.A.R., Oblivion, Just Cause, Rainbox Six Vegas, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, and just about every Steam game available and no issues at all. My only gripe is with FEAR, Just Cause, and Rainbow Six not supporting WS. Other than that, try for a 19" - 20" WS monitor  Or buy a cheap monitor and wait for the newer ones to come out

i guess i dont agree with most of this guy's ideas on games

2007 = F.E.A.R, Age of Conan, and Crysis (maybe Half-life 2)

I have both a Raptor 74gb and a WD 250gb 7200rpm, 16mb cache drive (~$80/Newegg). I have ran both as OS drives...honestly...you can't tell the difference in almost every case. I realize that the older Raptors are only an 8mb cache drive, but still...cost of performance/drive space more than makes up for the 2ms in time. If you can tell 1-2ms in time difference, then you might want to inquire about jobs at NASA. If you want performance, buy 2 x 250's, run them in RAID0 and viola! Double performance for still 1/2 of a Raptor. Use the extra dough to upgrade video card to at least a 7900 series NV card or equivalent ATI counterpart...it will do you wonders.

I am sorry to have to correct you, eurasian, but having a power supply that is too powerful should not be an issue, unless it's a crappy power supply. It should deliver exactly the amount of power necessary. That being said, the system he is building only needs a 350 watt power supply, but I'd recommend 500 watt if he's thinking of getting a 8800 GTS, or a 450 watt for a power supply like I have: the 7950GT.

Krimy:

It was fun reading this thread, and there is plenty of good information and misinformation floating around here. Most of what you have been told is correct, and you should be fine with your choice.

I would like to chime in however:
Yes, I agree with eurasian, get the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 16MB Cache 320 GB hard drive. (or 250)

Get a 500 watt power supply from a reputable company. Seasonic is an excellent choice, but expensive. I got an Enermax Noisetaker, but there's nothing special about it except the efficiency (and they make good power supplies, of course)

You going to wait for a 8800GTS to come down in price? Please. The DX10 games aren't going to be out for a while, and even when they do, they will play perfectly well on a DX9 card, especially if you like to run them at 1024x768. Furthermore, you will need Windows Vista for DX10; do you plan on getting Vista? I recently got the 7950GT, but the radeon 1950XT is probably a better buy now.

Get a sound card. The asus boards are very good, but known to have crappy sound and crackling. The Audigy 4 SE that I got from Newegg will be good for you, as it offloads the processing from the cpu to the sound card, and sounds good. You can get an x-fi if you have high fidelity ears, and like to burn money!

I chose the Asus P5B-E, which is in between the P5B and P5B deluxe. It has firewire and overclockability, but not as good overclockability as the deluxe. However, as you are not planning to overclock, unless you want a firewire port, the P5B will be an adequate, stable board for you.

Get the Corsair 800 XMS2 ram. I recommend strongly against OCZ: They have compatibility issues, and sometimes, stability issues. I am running the corsair 667, and I can guarantee that will work.

If you don't mind doing a little extra work when you put the build together, get arctic silver 5 paste. Instructions on how to apply are at arcticsilver.com

Nice case :)

I'll say again. The OCZ GameXStream 700w is the best power supply for the money. It's only like 140 and it'll last you a VERY long time.

I'm sorry, let me rephrase that. For some weird reason, a few people have been getting OCZ power supplies that have too much voltage going through the 12V rail. My OCZ 600 was pushing about 12.6V on the 12V rail. I didn't mean 600 WATTs is too much. A computer can limit how much power it needs. The computer components will only request what it needs. However, as far as the power supply goes, I recieved 3 OCZ power supplies, each had between 10% or more on the 12V than suppost to. If I remember correctly, you can have a +10% on your rails and the 600WATT ones were pushing more than that causing my computer to reboot! Sorry for the misunderstanding.

IMO, it's best to look for a power supply that has Active PFC. Active PFC

Just make sure to double check the minimum requirements for the nVidia 8800 series if you plan on getting that. I think anything above 500WATTs will suffice for your build. If you want to be safe, go for 600WATT.

Also, from experience. My friend bought a $30 500WATT power supply for his rig. A month later, gone through 2 gfx cards, lost a hard drive, etc. Power supplies are crucial! The old saying, "You get what you paid for." Just keep that in mind.

Okay, I got all the best pieces I could, and I was still under $1500 lol.

I decided to up the ante a bit, get you the best card you could get in that budget range.

Processor
-Core 2 Duo 6400. Best budget processor. Better than the 6300 for over-clocking and general purposes because of its 8x multiplier.

Motherboard
-Asus P5B non-SLI. Great for over-clocking and single-card solutions. PCI-Express slot. Very popular and recommended motherboard for the Conroe processors.

Hard Drive
-Western Digital 500gb SATA drive. When are you going to run out of space with a 500 gb drive?

Power Supply
-Best power supply for the money. Great 12v rail power. 700 watts to last you a LONG time. Very highly recommended. Under the sticker it's an FSP power supply, the best PSU brand in the market.

RAM
-OCZ Gamer ram. Great timings, great brand, GREAT price. It's on sale right now, and it's a really good deal for a 2gb dual channel set up of this caliber.

Video-card
-A freakin' 7950GT going for the same price as the 1950Pro and 1900XT. This card smokes ALL the competition in the 250$ range and it's almost the same price. GREAT card, will last you a LONG time.

Case
-The Thermaltake case you liked and had in the beginning. Black, with a window. This case is great for aftermarket cooling. Black Armor Jr.

DVD burner
-I was just looking for one to throw in. Good brand, good reliability and it's cheap. No reason to fork out on the DVD burner unless you're getting something cutting edge like Blu-ray but those are like $650 US lol.

There you have it. Great system and it's under $1800. If you want to go all the way to $1800, you could get after-market cooling for the CPU. (I recommend ArcCool Freezer 7 Pro) You could also upgrade the video-card, but really the 7950GT is one of the best you can get.

Heh. Nameless, I chose those parts so that he could have the 8800. If you checked, he wants to be able to play Crysis

Other than that, your components aren't a bad pick either.

I'm out for a while.

The 8800GTS won't be able to run Crysis @ max settings with DX10. The tech demo of Crysis is with an 8800GTX and it runs like crap. That's also probably with quad core Intel chips and 4 gb of ram.

If he wants to run Crysis @ max DX9, my rig is more than capable of it.

I don't know why he'd plan this far ahead for Crysis anyway, it's not even coming out until September.
