Hello, I have recently built my self a gaming PC and for some reason it boots really slow and i keep getting windows not responding and programs always freeze.

system specs:
Asus P8H61-MX USB3 Socket 1155 VGA DVI 8 Channel Audio mATX Motherboard
Intel Core i5 2320 3.0GHz Socket 1155 6MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor
Crucial 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333Mhz Ballistix Sport Memory Kit CL9 1.5V
Alpine 700W Blue PSU - 12cm Fan 4x SATA
Asus HD 7770 2GB AMD Radeon Graphics Card
Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit

I have tried turning off boot programs, i have tried 2 different hard drives, 2 different versions of the operating system and its not over heating and its just running slow. at times it will work fine once booted but other times the whole system freezes. once when it froze i just left it for a hour and it stays the same, still frozen!

I have scanned for viruses... nothing
Used CCleaner... no improvement

If some one could please help me fix this because i spent so much money on building it and now I'm starting to think it was a waist of money.

Maybe there's a software i could use to troubleshoot for system errors?

Maybe lodes of windows setting wrong?

Any help would be most grateful
thanks Ross

run memtest to see if your ram is working or dead.
if possible check voltages output from the psu

shut down your computer
insert the windows disk
click install > advanced install
delete all partitions
create partion of all available space
format both the system partition created and the normal partition
install windows on the nromal partition
when windows is set up install only:
-antivirus
-video card drivers
-motherboard drivers

how does your pc perform at this point? restart a few times and try using basic windows included applications.

at this point in time your pc should be running fast without any issues at all.

some program compatability errors can cause windows to slow down or freeze up.
virii (plural of virus) and other malware also can cause similar lockups and slowdown (such as the blaster32 worm)
failing ram can also cause slowdown issues

when dealing with such an error i often go back to square one and check system performance after every software and driver added to see where in the lineup i had an issue.

i highly suggest doing a format to wipe the hard drive and doing a fresh install instead of upgrade installs in case this is what you were doing before.

Thanks for the help but i have already tried making re installing my operating system like you said but it was still the same. Do you think that maybe it is my new hard drive failing?

did you delete the partitions, re partition and format when you tried? did you do the same to the other test hard drive you were using?

a failing hard drive can cause issues like you describe however it seems like you have the same issues on a known to be working drive as well or am i wrong?

if this is true it would make me think the issue is elsewhere.

possible causes

-hd failure
-ram failure
-fluctuating voltages from psu
-some sort of issue with the mb

personally i'd swap out the power cable for another one and the sata cable as well just to make sure. doubt its this but i've seen stranger.

lets be very clear about one thing also. if you changed ANY bios options make sure you reset everything to defaults before you try a windows install. screwy bios settings can cause everything from lock-ups to slowdowns. typically you see this from people trying to overclock though.
