My new pc doesn't boot up

Ok guys so I just attempted to put together my first pc and well it isnt booting. 🙁

It turns on, powers up and the internal speaker gives off a single beep. The fan turns on and the CPU appears to be working- the fan is spinning on it. The DVD drive works fine and the led's etc work.

I read the troubleshooting guide on this forum and I think I might know the issue- I didn't put the stand off's in. Could this cause an issue like this and if so is it a serious issue or is it just a matter of taking the board out and putting it back in again.

I am incredibly worried about this, I took a risk by attempting to build a pc from scratch and I can't afford for this to turn out to be a massive waste of cash.

A single short beep usually indicates a "good POST" signalling all is well on the motherboard. A single long beep (one second or more) may indicate troubles with video, ram or even (possibly) a short on the board.
If dealing with a short beep, I would suspect your video cable or monitor if you are not getting any display.
If dealing with a long beep, I would check to make sure the graphics card is firmly seated and auxullary power is also firmly attached. Also check your ram is fully seated and there are no longer any shorts on/under the board (all standoffs are screwed in in the correct positions - no stray metal objects). Finally, I would reset CMOS.
If you are/were getting the long beep when the standoffs were not installed, that may be the only issue.

You definitely need the standoffs. Take out your mobo, screw in the standoffs, then put it back. It doesn't sound like it did permanent damage. I have my fingers crossed for you.
