Hi all long time stalker first time poster

Talked the misses in to letting me buy my first high end rig and this is what i am getting in the next few weeks.

I already own a Antec 1200 case witha 650w Neopower SLI PSU

I7 920 with a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme 1366RT from reading i'm hopeing to get somewhere close to 4ghz.
6GB (3x2GB) Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600
150GB VRaptor
1TB WD Cavier Green
XFX GTX275 XXX.
Asus P6T

I've done a little searching but i always come here for info when looking for answers and would like peeps opinion on this rig and would i be able to achive 4ghz with the Ultra 120 and poss 2000 on the ram inside the A1200.

Here are few suggestions that you can consider...

1. Get the i7 920 with D0 stepping...they are known to overclock better than the older C0 stepping...

2. As for the CPU cooler, get another FAN in Push-Pull configuration...It performs better in that config.

3. The Dominators would do a good job but there are other options too...

4. Dont waste money on the VRaptors...The price premium is very high and their performance doesnot justify that pricce premium...
2x WD Black 640GB in RAID 0, would outperform the VRaptors and they give about 1.2TB of space for the same price...

5. Dont spend extra money on factory o/c graphics card...most of the manufacturers give a s/w, that could o/c the card to those levels...

6. The ASUS P6T is a very good board...Another good alternative...

I agree with not wasting money on vraptors, but 2x WD Black 640GB HDDs in RAID 0, while fast, will only give you 640GB of space, not 1.2TB. You also double your risk of hard drive failure in a RAID 0 configuration as well as add to the burden of your power supply. You also complicate things in your build. If you're up for it though, you will see decent results. Is that worth saving $50? Maybe, maybe not.


I do not agree with not buying factory OC cards. I've spoken with eVGA on this and they have told me their process for selecting cards for their OC BIOS's. Basically, they get the GPUs in from nVidia and test every single one of them. The highest quality chips go into a bin for the highest OC BIOS, their next best go into the bin for the standard OC BIOS, all the rest that pass eVGA's QC go in for regular BIOS.

Only the highest quality chips get the OC BIOS's. I.E. you can OC them further than non factory OC'd cards.

Hey all thanks for your info, I will deff look in to getting another fan for hte push pull config. The mobo i'm having second thoughts about and now looking at hte Rampage II Extreme mobo.

I was looking at a Raid setup but then came across teh VRaptor. The VRaptor was only going to be for program access all Pic's, music and the rest for the 1tb drive. I have a few extra drives that can go in as well so it all adds up

@deuce271 I doubt what you said...
Only RAID 1 would give that space as it would mirror data onto both the HDDs whereas RAID 0 strips the data into half and stores them into the 2 drives...that is why it is said that if 1 drive fails in RAID 0 config, your data is lost...
So RAID 0 of 2x 640GB drives would give you 1.2TB space and
RAID 1 of 2x 640GB drives would give you 640GB of space...

And as for the graphics card, what you said is right...but I doubt you would see significant increase in the real-world performance...

As for the mobo, go with the Extreme only if you are planning for Tri-SLI as the P6T in Dual-SLI config would give some what comparable performance...And the Extreme is about $130 more...
And you can very well check out the Rampage Gene if you are not planning to go with more than 2 graphics cards as you can see from the article that I had linked, it would beat the P6T in most of the benchmarks and it is also an enthusiast level product...
But if you still want performance and reach that 4GHz mark easy, then the Rampage would be the best option...
Actually you can also look into the Gigabyte Extreme...It is also well known for its oc abilities though not as much as the Rampage but still very much there...
