My newly bought 390 is barely performing

Greetings countrymen,

So I bought myself a Sapphire R9 390 Nitro almost a month ago. However, after doing some gaming with it, I noticed this GPU isn’t bringing out nearly as much FPS per second as reviews indicated. It cannot keep up on smooth 1080p 60 FPS with even all details in high on Metal Gear Solid 5. Nor can it keep up with games like Red Orchestra 2 and Company of Heroes 1 where it can drop down to 20 FPS.

It shouldn’t be a bottleneck as my i7 860 still allows the GPU to run at 100%.
RAM is 12gb. One pair of 4gb is 1333mhz and one pair of 8gb is 1600mhz.
PSU is a Corsair TX750W so it should provide enough juice.

Is this something deeper? I have not overclocked my CPU at all but surely that’s not that necessary for this GPU to push out stand performance no?

Any ideas?

You are not going to. R9 390 will not give you a steady 60fps on Metal Gear Solid 5, but it will average that none the less. But with RO2 and COH? Hmm, that is interesting. What's with the mismatch RAM? If I was you, I would get rid of the 4GB pair, 8GB of the same freq, will perform better than mix matching size and freq clock. And yes, although your CPU is a tier 3, it is an older chip/architecture and this might give you some issues with newer games for sure. When you are playing, what are your core load reading? Get those readings, if they are reading 80-100% then you will know if it's bottlenecking for sure.

Hey guys,

So my temperatures are pretty stable not maxing 70 degrees celsius on my GPU at load even with a slight overclock.
From memory, my CPU cores do fluctuate around 50 degrees celsius though i need to check if that's from load or idle.

So would CPU-Z be the best software to tell me if my CPU is running at 100% load during games? I have to admit, that function hasn't been that easy to find comparing to other things.

Wasn't there a few reviews or benchmarks that showed the 390 can do 1080p with high settings? Like thishttp://www.techspot.com/review/1060-metal-gear-solid-phantom-pain-benchmarks/page2.html

It's sad to see that the GTX 970 (which is actually a less powerful card than the R9 390) can run everything maxed in 1080p while the r9 390 barely can because of the favoring optimization to Nividia. It's just not fair for consumers that want competition.

970 and 390 are in the same class, the only time you will get an edge from 970 is when playing games memory hungry like GTA V. So your card will perform at 1080p at 60FPS, but it does not mean it will stay there during your whole gaming experience. Have you benchmark it with Heaven? Core Temp is a good app, but also use MSI afterburner along with Riva Turner.

Yeah MSI afterburner is apparently the best. However, when i try using it, sometimes the whole computer's desktop stops responding where a strong constant buzz sound comes from the speakers. Hence, I use Sapphire Trix. Power issue perhaps?

Will give a heaven benchmark tonight and show the score for it.
