Moved back in with the parents for a while, personal situation dictates...their internet stinks but i want to see about getting Fios for myself hooked up at their house, without interfering with their bills and such. is this possible?

Yes it is possible, they'll will send an optical cable to your house, and give you a different router and all, you are going to have to open up an accound with verizon. and just tell them that you live in the basement or something, so you want a different internet connection, and they do not mess anything up with the current connection.

Make sure you tell the tech before he starts any work to leave the existing network alone. Let him know active service is going to run through the lines and you dont want any changes, everything needs to be new.

This also depends a lot on what is actually available at your residence.
DSL, cable, fiber....

If all they can get is slow DSL, thats all you can get.
If and only if FiOS is available at your house, then yes, go for it. It is a pretty intrusive install though.
