I have a My Passport WD external hard drive and I'm using an asus laptop with Windows 8.1. It doesn't happen all the time but there are times when I'll hear a quiet beeping sound. It will go for about a second then stop for a few seconds and repeat. I only hear it while using my headphones and I thought it was an issue with my headphones but I noticed the light on my external hard drive would flash in perfect time with the beeps and when I unplug it, the beeping stops. The hard drive is making sound that picks up in my headphones. What can I do to stop this, if anything can be done?

Hey there, zenco2!

I'm sorry to hear about your concerns with the WD My Passport.
The drive technology dictates that some noise might occur during drive operations.
Some are good and some might indicate that there's physical damage on the HDD which you cannot fix by yourself.
I'd suggest to check this link and determine whether or not the sounds you hear are normal or abnormal: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=DyMBO4
Another thing you can try is testing if the WD My Passport will work properly on another computer.

Keep me posted! Hope this helps! :)

Hi
Since you can only hear it through your headphones then I suspect it is being caused by EMI(Electro Magnetic Interference).
This would be very unusual as the drive is completely covered in metal shielding.
All I can suggest is that you try and move the drive to somewhere else in the case, preferably as far from the motherboard as possible.
Also if you are using the front headphone jack then see if you can reroute the cable from the motherboard to the jacks as far away from the drive as possible.

It doesn't seem to be a proximity thing for the drive itself but I'll try moving it to a different usb port and see if that helps at all. It doesn't have any effect on the functionality at the drive works perfectly as it should.
