hi all, I just got a WD my passport ultra 2TB from a friend. It was a very communal harddrive so I don't know what happened to it.
In computer management, it's recognized as RAW format, and when I try to open it from my computer, it gives the error message of "Device can't be opened because of I/O error"
I don't care much about saving data(although it would be a bonus), I just want to get it to work again.

Please help! Thanks in advance

Hi there guidefari,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive.

I believe you can try to run some data recovery software for RAW drive format. In case that does not work, then you can go to Disk Management and try to reformat the drive, as VernSummer00 suggested. After that, it may be a good idea to check the drive's health out with WD's DLG tool(both short and extended tests): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=v6sQyP

If both fail, due to I/O(input/output) error, then you will need to attach the drive with a different USB cable to another port. That way you will see all of this is caused by some connection related issue.

In case the issue persists, then there is something wrong with the enclosure or the HDD...

Hello,
As I know, a computer hard drive could turn into RAW file system due to some reasons, like sudden drive extracting, virus attacks, improper format, sudden computer power loss or power surge or even drive corruption, etc. However, no matter why your WD passport becomes RAW, go format it on your computer to turn its RAW file system to a compatible one (NTFS or FAT) and restore its functional use.
And then, the problem will be resolved.

Let me know how this goes,
