My PC build turns off after a second; is this because of CPU incompatibility?

So I upgraded my motherboard to an Asus z170 Gaming Aura. I installed all my old components: A GTX 970 SLI, Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM (2x8gb) and an intel i5 4440. When I tried to boot it up, my PC shutdown before showing any screen, after about a second.

I started to diagnose the problem. First I jumpstarted my PSU to find it was working perfectly well. My motherboard was also unlikely because all the lights on it were functioning and none of the pins were bent.

Then I realised something very stupid: The Asus z170 has an LGA1151 socket whereas my i5 4440 uses an LGA1150 socket. So the two are not compatible and I will need to get an LGA1151 CPU (I have this one in mind: http://))

But before I splash out 330 pounds on a new i7 7700K, I want to know for certain that this CPU incompatibility IS in fact what makes my Pc fail to boot up. So Will installing that new i7 fix the problem?

PS - subquestion: the z170s manual says it's made for 6th generation intel processors, but considering 7th generation i7s use LGA 1151 it should work perfectly right?

You could have even damaged your motherboard by putting an incompatible CPU in. You motherboard could support a 7th gen CPU with a BIOS upgrade (if you haven't damaged it). The vendor's support site shows the 7700K supported with the appropriate BIOS -- https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z170-PRO-GAMING-AURA/HelpDesk_CPU/

But you might have toasted it. No way to know.

Hello,

Unfortunately, LGA 1150 and LGA1151 are incompatible - the connections are different.
You should be able to upgrade to Kaby, but will probably need to update your BIOS if not done already.

You most definitely damaged the motherboard. Not only is the PCB thinner on skylake, it's notched so it's physically impossible to mismatch a CPU and socket.
