Hello. For the past few days my pc would freeze for about 1 to 2 seconds then turn off at random. It turned off as if I pulled the power cord out. This isn't an over heating problem as my temps are around 40c. I think it may be a psu issue but I need help.
Here is my specs:
Windows 10 pro
i7 860 @ 2.80GHz (Overclocked to 3.4 GHz)
8gb ddr3 ram
Gigabyte h55-usb3 motherboard
1050ti graphics card
3 hdd
1 optical drive
8 fans (12w) (Before you ask yes it is needed for water cooling then case cooling)
400w psu
Idle temp of cpu = 35c
Idle temp of GPU = 25

Solution

Then it is most likely the PSU. Old age, unknown brand, 400W, spells disaster. Look for a better unit:

I gave the 650W unit as the 550W is the same price. So 650W will last quite some time and give some good upgradability.

He really doesn't need 550W, a good 450 W unit is more than enough. Consider the Corsair CX450, it is a good unit for the price. In case you want to upgrade in the future, or simply like higher wattage, the SeaSonic S12II 520 W is also a good unit.

And yes, the PSU is most likely the problem here, but RAM could also produce such issues. Test your memory(RAM, that is) using memtest86, if there are no errors(provided your PC doesn't crash during the testing), then you can assume the PSU to be at fault and get it changed.

If he buys anything less than a 550W then its a throwaway item.
He may upgrade his computer in the future and will need to buy another PSU.
Stick with 550W it will future proof you from most upgrades

Tried lowering the cpu overclock?
