As the title says my pc cant find a 5ghz signal and theres 40-161 channel which one would work with a Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz)
does the 2.4 ghz on the end mean my pc can only run on 2.4ghz speed?

(EDIT) I've done some extreme research on my network card there is a lot of complaints of people only run at speeds at 15Mps and not detecting the 5Ghz band..... but i got lucky so i'm running at 40Mps on a 100Mps network (Still connected to the 2.4Ghz Band) but when i bypass the router and plug directly into the wall i get speeds at 95 Mps. My router can run on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands....and there is no chance of interference also....

Solution
The frequency is not directly related to the speed. If you run 802.11n on either frequency band they run the same speed at least in lab conditions.

It depends on if your pc nic AND your router have support for 5g for you to use it.

The main reason to use the 5g band is to avoid interference from other people using wireless on the 2.4g band. The 5g band does not have as much range when walls are involved so you get less interference from neighbors but also much less coverage in your house.

Which actually runs faster will depend on your house and your neighbors. The actual data encoding though is exactly the same.

In most cases you will not exceed 100mbit/sec on any 802.11n connection in real world installs and many times less.

You need an adapter than can pick up the higher frequency. For example, my PS4 cannot detect a 5Ghz signal but my iPhone can. The speeds however are relatively the same. Best option is to switch to a wireless channel that gives you a better signal if you've tried all those other steps already.
