my pc reboots overnight and goes into a boot loop (approx 5x) during the bios screen before going into Windows

Hi All,

Computer Newbie here, I recently started having an issue with my PC, it would go into a restart overnight at some point and stay in a boot loop. By the time I see this in the morning, I would see it reboot in a loop for a few times before I can get to the Windows login screen.

I have tried shutting down completely and turning it on again. I have restarted also (first option) but upon restart it would get as the black bios/dos screen then it would beep one time and restart and repeat in a loop for a minimum of at least 5x before I get to the Windows screen and then it will work fine for the rest of the day until the next morning.

This is an older pc, specs on this machine I cannot remember. But on a guess, what could be the issue or issues that could be causing this to happen?

One guess was the video card?

Any ideas would be welcome.

Does it go into sleep mode at night before beginning the restart cycle? Basically, what happens to it at night that never happens during the day? If you download cpuz or hwinfo64, they will tell you the complete specs for the machine.

Thank you for your quick response. I should clarify this is a workstation at the office, so when the work day is done, the machine just sits there and does nothing until the next morning. I have tried logging off, shutting down, and restarting before leaving the office. Yes correct, so something is happening at night that is not happening during the day.

If you have an IT guy, I would just let him deal with it haha. It's hard to know exactly what goes on with work computers at night because they often remote in and do updates/cleanup if you are in a big office. The beep you are hearing is a beep code that will tell us what the main problem is, but we would have to what the computer is. If it is a dell, then that single beep means there is something wrong with the motherboard or BIOS chip. I guess the CMOS battery could be dying, but I don't see why it would only occur at night.

Thanks again for your input. I have a feeling it could be the CMOS battery since this machine is older than the rest in this office. Our office is small, just 6ppl. That beep is that sound it makes when you press the on button, or when it starts up. I think its a normal beep if that makes any sense.

It is weird that it would reboot at night, for how long it loops for we don't know. So now we just turn the machine off when leaving. It's annoying that we'd have to sit there and watch the machine loop until it finally gets to the Windows login screen.

Do you think this has anything to do with the video card at all? I ask because it was a suggestion/idea that was brought up from one of the guys in the office.

Thanks for your time and advice.

No. Default boot attempts is usually set to 3x, after which it reverts to the last known working bios. So you'll get a loop, restart until that timer is met. This can be caused by a low running battery reseting or corrupting the bios or can also be due to fast startup conflicting with drivers on shutdown. This is common after windows updates or additions/removal/updates of programs using one set of drivers, but windows is loading a different version.
