My PC Suffered a Power Surge

My girlfriend was plugging something in while it was dark and a micro USB cable plugged into my computer got caught between the power strip and her charger, which then caused a power surge. The computer was plugged into the same power strip that suffered the surge.

I assumed that the motherboard was fried since the USB was the source of the surge. The computer was also plugged in, and I don't know how the rest of my components are affected. I took it into a repair shop to see if they could see what parts in the computer are damaged and they basically plugged a PSU into it and told me nothing happened (thanks, i guess). So, I still don't know exactly what parts are done for and which ones aren't.

All of my components are still under warranty, but I doubt that the manufacturer will cover outside electrical damages. What should my next move be? How should I figure out what parts are damaged and which ones aren't?

Your only option is swapping parts to find out what works. If you don’t have parts to try you either need a friend or a better computer shop to help.

From your description of how this happened I would think a damaged motherboard but there is no way to know for sure. Could be more than just the motherboard or something else completely.

That's what sucks about my situation, I moved to a smaller town for college. None of my friends have a PC, and the computer shops have a "just buy a new one" mentality.

If I do find a way to test components, I'm worried about the processor. It would be much harder for me to test if it works or not. Would a surge like this be likely to damage the CPU, or is that as unsure as the other components?
