I have never built a PC, but do not think I did any of the wiring wrong. When I turn on the back of the PSU the motherboard lites up. When i try to turn the power button on the case on the PSU fan starts for a quarter second then turns off, and nothing else starts up. What is wrong and how do I fix it?

I did but i still need this question answered.

When I tried to do the bread board thing something fried and smoke came up.(thanks for the sound advice) I think the motherboard is fried.

lol yes its all his fault for telling you to try to troubleshoot. This is why you don't buy a cheap PSU.

Sigh. We should have added another step to the top of the list in large red bold type:

"Be very, very careful. We are trained professionals. Do not try this at home."

I could be nastier and paraphrase the old Wordperfect Customer Support story, but I won't.

Assuming your (thanks) wasn't sarcasm, but just bad word/phrase-order (i.e. might better have been "thanks for the guide, but when I tried the breadboarding, I got..."):

Hmmm, short resulting from no standoffs, or an extra one? From where did smoke come up?
List all your components, including the brand and model of PSU.

If, OTOH, you *were* being sarcastic, you should probably get a Dell, advertised as being suitable for your intended use(s).
