When i pulled the heat sink out the cpu came out with it while the latch was still locked. some pins were bent fut after straightening them and putting it back in the pc wont power up at all. already did a breadboard set up and checked the PSU just in case. so its down to either the mobo or cpu that is broken. any suggestion on narrowing it down?

Mobo is an MSI 870a-g46
CPU is an AMD phenom 2 x4 970

Solution
That's a common problem with AMD, but it can be avoided. In hindsight, all you had to do was turn the heatsink a bit while pressing down to dislodge the sink from the old paste. Some people will go so far as to heat it up a bit first, but I've never failed with the turning method. Before that I had snatched a couple off the board and bent pins. Usually bent pins are not a problem as long as you bend them back. Mechanical pencil is good for that.

As to why your system won't POST, it could be lots of reasons, like forgetting to plug something in like CPU 12v power. You should also re-inspect your pins. If any broke, there are ways to fix that too.

checked everything. cleared CMOS, checked the pins, checked it was plugged in properly. only a few oddities had happened. when i first put the cpu back in it started to power up but shut down and if i leave it off for a while when i triy to power it up when its all fully plugged in the fans will twitch. if i run it without the cpu power plugged in i can get any fans attached to the mobo to start up but no beeps or anything of the like to indicate a problem

ill try leaving the battery out overnight just to be sure but it was out for 4 hours earlier today and nothing. but other than that everything else has been tried in those guides

It sounds like you damaged it in some way, which is hard to do. You sure there are no broken pins?

Ok what you need to do is strip a small piece of wire, ethernet cable works good for this. Jam that little piece of copper into the appropriate socket hole. This works about 80% of the time, but it may take a few tries with various lengths of wire.

the pin that broke wasnt in the socket. it was laying in the original package where i set the chip while it wasnt in the pc. so is the wire to simulate a pin or was it to try and get the broken pin out?

Yes. It's tricky.

Try a few more times with varying lengths of wire to make sure it gets a good connection.

Alternatively you could take it to a jeweler for repair but it's not really worth it for such an old CPU model.

In reality if you can't do the wire trick then you are out of luck on this one.

well as a side note the pin didnt break til i was checking them this morning. if it was loose it would have still made the connection though when i was testing before right?
