Question My PC worked perfectly until today --- the fans are spinning but there's no display ?

Hi all,

I built my current PC over a year ago and have not really had problems with it. Sometimes, my PC’s fans would start spinning and light up without outputting any display, but that would resolve itself after I held down the power button to turn it off and turned it back on. This afternoon, I turned on my PC after using it for a few hours, and the problem happened again. However, no amount of turning it off and restarting is fixing the issue.

The full issue goes like this; I turn my PC on, and my fans (9 of them) start spinning and light up. They whir for a few seconds then return to a normal speed, as they usually do when the issue isn’t present. However, my monitors will not receive any signal. My keyboard and mice also do not light up like they normally do - my RGB obsession that I’ve grown out of has definitely come in handy with troubleshooting.

These are the things I’ve tried:
  • Taking out RAM, trying each one in all four slots, and together in 1/3 and 2/4.
  • Taking out GPU
  • Disconnecting the case fans and RGB
  • Taking out the silver mobo battery for 10 minutes
  • Cleaning most components
  • Reseating CPU - no bent pins

Regarding my CPU, my motherboard has an “EZ Debug LED” feature in which the CPU LED is lit. The MSI website says I should reseat and check for bent pins, which I didn’t find.

Parts list:
MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Plus
i5-10600
Gigabyte GeForce 2060 Windforce OC V2 6G
Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200MHz (8gb x2)
Lian Li PC0-11 case
Crucial P1 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD

While I built these with new parts a year ago, I did keep my PSU from my build in about 2015-16. I would have lost the exact model, but it’s a Corsair with about 550W. Not sure if this is the culprit; I do plan on downsizing my computer in about a year, so I’ll probably need a new PSU. If it’s likely that the PSU is the issue, I’m happy to look for another now.

I’m on a very limited budget so specialist support is a last resort. I appreciate any advice :)

so i had the same issue while building a pc for my ex girlfriend and the issue i had was that it would turn on, all the fans would spin. but no display no rgb for the mouse or the keyboard nor did they seem to work. i ended up trying the same things as you did then i decided to do a bare bones build and still nothing so i decided to start swapping parts with ones i knew were good. i then got to the cpu and replaced it with my own and then suddenly everything was working. i then changed out the motherboard with a spare that i had which had the troubleshooting light on the mobo. i paired that mobo with the cpu from the pc i was building and then the CPU light was on on the motherboard stating that there was an issue with my cpu. and sure enough it ended up being a dead CPU... hopefully this helps a bit with your situation. id suggest if you have another CPU lying around or a friend that has one you can borrow just to point you in the right direction.

Best of luck
