Hi, so I posted this on PlayStation forums but everyone just tells me I need HDTV but my problem is that all my ps3 games for some reason look really blurred down but mostly in the distance. Also, I know for a fact its not my TV or screen settings because theyre set right. And all the display settings for my ps3 are right,(resolution etc.) for my TV..... But..... They still just don't look right, they are very jaggedy and bad looking in the distance. They just basically look like Wii graphics to me so can someone please help me? I can give you more details if you need them, the only games I have are Uncharted 3, Batman Arkham City, Battlefield 3 and infamous 2.. :[

Solution

Well you're not exactly giving us enough information here. What type of TV do you have? Can you link us to it somewhere?

Some games may need to cut down on some of the AA and AF settings to make the performance better. This is far preferable to low fps issues(remember PS1 when the last Twisted Metal games came out? better graphics but awful frame rates.).

It could be normal for the games.

Yeah some people have told me that but I don't think its supposed to be as ridiculous as mine, besides i see game plays and walkthroughs on YouTube all the time. But OK Here is the info on the displays I use. I sometimes use a 1080p PC monitor(connected with an HDMI to DVI cable) here's the linkhttp://
I also use an old 1999 480i tube tv and its an AIWA brand..... but I still don't think its supposed to look that way even on old tv. Because I used to play Xbox 360 on it and I remember going to my fruends house and playing ps3 on his old crt tv. Oh and yes I use the standard cables with the ps3 for the old tv

Even tube tv's came in different levels of quality. 640x480 is a very low resolution, and it being interlaced and only limited to 30 Hz doesn't help. Tube Tv's wear down with age as well. Does it look just as bad on the monitor?

Solution

Yes it honestly does look the same, all it does is make it HD basically. The blurriness and almost "distortions" are still there. So, basically it makes it look like an HD version of the same problem. Especially in battlefield 3 how am I supposed to kill people if I can't see very far? I'm beginning to think its the ps3

Hmm, interesting. Maybe your non-resolution oriented settings are messed up. Try a video reset. Just hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then see if its any better.

This is a very good point. /\

I have also noticed that some PC monitors do not do as well with HDMI(but it is mostly older ones). I will NEVER use the HDMI port on my screen(SyncMaster 245t. yes a 600 dollar screen has awful HDMI in[composite in is not that great, but expected that], but everything else is very good.) for anything but maybe a cable box or other source that is not as effected by the awful overscan/stretching/blurring. Again, this should be limited to older hardware.

Sigh, yes I've already tried that, I've basically tried everything in the troubleshooting procedure.............. Even formatting my hardrive....... And restored default settings

Guess I have been lucky as I have never had any problems at all with any HDMI input on any of my equipment. And I had a SyncMaster 245t at one time until I got my three Asus 27" monitors for my first Eyefinity setup. And I was using the HDMI port with no problems ever.

What did you connect with HDMI? I have tried AMD/Nvidia/Intel cards and cable box/bluray players.

The cablebox and bluray player are not BAD(video it self was always ok), but from a computer even VGA looks better on this screen. Not to mention HDMI only supports 1920 x 1080 on a 1920 x 1200 screen(on top of the overscan). Even with the video cards overscan compensation, it was just not sharp text was fuzzy looking.

If the screen has a missing option to disable it's overscan, I have not found it yet.

If you have any suggestions, I am all ears :)

I don't think it's an HDMI port issue, because the same issue exists when he uses RCA cables on his tube television. I suppose it's possible that both your television and monitor or both your HDMI cable and RCA cables are bad, but to truly test this out, I suggest you go to a friend's house and use a different HDMI cable with their television.

The other possibility could just be that you have a very powerful placebo effect occuring though I doubt it could be that bad. Just in case, try taking the clearest possible picture you can of your screen (preferably of the monitor, but taking a picture of both might also be beneficial) and posting the picture(s) here.

Just upload them there and provide the link. It's better if you leave the resolution at default, i.e. choose "Do not resize" for "image resize".

Alright then thanks I'll do that

Hmmm, I can see what you mean somewhat for Battlefield 3 but I can't tell if it's because it's just because it's crappy resolution or not. In person, can you easily read the names of your squad mates on the lower left of your HUD? Because for me it's impossible. Also try taking pictures of your monitor as well.

Hmm, well I think I see what you mean and I'm hoping this isn't just due to the fact that's its a camera taking a picture of the screen rather than a capture card. But I think I see what you mean when you say it's blurry. It doesn't exactly seem "blurry" to me but it looks like there is sort of a slight oil painting effect on some of the objects. I hope I'm not developing a placebo effect too.... haha.

Well I did a little more research. Do you have a cable box anywhere nearby or does your PS3 seem really hot? The former could apparently cause interference (though that seems unlikely and it seems more to do with nearby heat conduction which plays into the latter) and the latter could be a result of a failing video chip.

Another option to try and fix it might be to play with the aspect ratio (switch between 4:3 and 16:9 regardless of native aspect ratio) or try playing with the cross colour reduction filter in the display settings?

I actually do have like 2 cable boxes near my ps3, I actually live in a 2 bedroom apartment so they are definitely close to it lol, other than that though the temperature of the ps3 seems normal not too hot. But I guess I'll try playing with the aspect ratio. I might buy an HDTV soon anyway. Thanks a lot for the help everyone :)
