[SOLVED] My PSU just fried and gave off smoke, is this related to my HDD that I just installed into the computer?

Maybe if there was a short in the hard drive. Even then that should've just triggered an immediate loss of power.

As for other stuff being damaged. It would depend on what happened during the PSU failure. You won't know until you get a new PSU and start testing parts. Even if everything is dead. You'll still need a new PSU for a new build. You may as well start there.

What was your old PSU?
