My stupid PC

Ok, I have a P4 1.4 computer 256 meg ram 15 gig HD. Windows 2000 and this thing boots up slower than molasses. I'm talking 3 full minutes. My sisters P3 700 flys by mine. How can I speed the stupid thing up without nuking the computer.

Also, everytime the computer boots up it launches this MIRC program. yet I can not find where it is. I've looked all over the computer and even in the add/remove programs.
The worst part is that even though I shut it down, it's still running somewhere in the background. No there is no icon in my systray. Please help me.

Sounds like you need to turn off a few things in your startup. And go to the "add/remove programs" control panel and uninstall software you do not use or want.
The easiest way to see and control what's starting up is to install something like the startup contol panel http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
It works just like msconfig does in Windows XP, making it very easy to disable things you do not want to start up with the system.

Or just download Msconfig for windows 2000 and install it into your WinNT\System32 folder, and use it as you normally would.

Take a look at your hardware configuration as well. My PC also takes forever to boot, but it's mostly in the POST and initialization because of the onboard RAID, SCSI card, and managed NIC.

try regcleaner. i kinda forget where you can get it, but its free. tells you alot about your pc too... gets rid of those startup entries like a hot knife thru butter.
