My new Toshiba 1TB hd shows up fine when plugged into my rear laptop USB port.

I wanted to back up specific directories so I just highlighted the directories I wanted to copy, used the copy command, and pasted them onto the Toshiba in folders I specified. Unfortunately, I don't see the specific files (though all of the folders seem to be there just fine).

Can't you use commands that way? Can I go to a Command Com window and do it using DOS commands?

I do see all of my files when I search via the DOS window.

Copying the folders should bring over everything under them over as well. You may have setup something non-standard in those folders. Did you set any of the files to system or to hidden or changed permissions on the files/folders?

If the files are on the drive when you search in a command prompt, you may have done one of those things since a search can bet set to find hidden files but when you just open the folder you won't see them.
