My Toshiba laptop's DVD drive won't work

My Windows 8.1 Toshiba laptop's dvd drive doesn't work anymore. We haven't used the drive for maybe a year then when we tried to use it this time, it's not working anymore. The drive won't eject, so we used a paperclip to eject it. Then we inserted a disk and it won't read the disk also. It really isn't working anymore. What's causing it and what should I do?

Get the drive out of the laptop (read manual how to) plug it back in, try again.

If it's still not working, which Toshiba model is it exactly? Update the bios of the Toshiba

After that it looks like the drive is defective. RMA it or get a new/used drive on eBay.
