I recently purchased a new external HDD in January 2015 and now it shows "Windows Needs to format in order to use it" (like so).

SO, my problem is how to bring my HDD back to working, i tried formatting it 2 times, every time it goes on for 4 hours and comes to 99% and then windows says that "Unable to complete format".

Its a 1TB HDD. The data in it is not a worry because it is all backed up. I just need my HDD back to working as it was.

For your information the HDD is not making any sound at all, it is running as silently as it was when i first used it. I always used Safe to Remove Hardware before removing. I also tried the diskpart method of formatting but it didn't work instead now when i try to format my HDD, it goes on for 13 hours and says 1% formatted.

Any help on this will be Very HELPFUL!:pt1cable:

Sorry to say it's usually a sign that the drive is faulty when it won't format, but since the data on it is obviously not important, try testing it with "SeaTools for Windows": http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/

Test it using the Long/Extended test and see if it reports "Failed" on any of the various test routines.

Thanks fzabkar and Phillip Corcoran for answering. I will try these and then report the results but tell me one thing that will the HDD ever work as it was before corruption ? or just remain faulty.

Yup ! My HDD passed the Short generic and DST. Will it go well ?

@greatrude, SeaTools is a PASS or FAIL diagnostic. You need to examine the SMART data with another tool. About the only other useful thing you can do with SeaTools would be to zero-fill your drive, and then re-examine the SMART data with another tool.

Sure, I will consider this. 🙂

Yes, Nasima it is in the warranty period, i have contacted the service center for replacement or repair, they said they will contact me within 7 days, so till then i was trying to solve the problem myself. :welcome:
