I was so bummed early on in this University install chaos. I went thru 4
copies of the game, before it finally installed.
Then had to remove all my downloads since the game kept kicking me out at
the "cafeinating students part of the splash screen". I thought I was
doomed to a life with a choppy slow game and none of my precious custom
content.
Well I found this page and it game instructions on how to make the game run
faster.
Well my previous load times were about 12-20 minutes with the downloads and
4 minutes without.....
tried the method from this page and now my game loads in less than a minute
with all my downloads included(no hacks included). The game is not choppy at
all and the performance boost has given me back my SIMS...
here is the link:

BTW I have a 3.2 with 1 gig ram and a Radeon 9800 pro 128mb video
card..... 120 gig hard drive
This game is definitely a memory/resource hog and when it is left to run by
itself, it purrs like a kitten and is downright fun to play again.....under
the right circumstances.
Hope this might help someone else out who is tired of the slow load times or
the inability to use all their downloads.
