So, most of my rig was built in 2012 - I bought an MSI 1060 6g last year and plan to keep it. I'll list my current setup, then list my potential upgrade. I plan to get a 144hz monitor around the holidays this year, so that is my goal. I am just looking for some input on what you guys think about what I am upgrading TO and whether or not it looks worthy of the cost. TIA !!!

- Current Setup -
MoBo -ASRock Z75 LGA 1155
CPU - i5-2310 Quad Core 2.9ghz
Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
RAM - Crucial Ballistix Sport 8gb (2x 4gb)
GPU - MSI 1060 6gb - reusing
Cooler Master Case - reusing
550w PSU - reusing

- Potential Upgrade -
Mobo - MSI Z730 Gaming PLUS LGA 1151 - $89.99 ($69.99 after rebate)
CPU - i5-8600K 3.6ghz - $219.99
Cooler - CRYORIG H7 Tower Cooler - $37.00
RAM - G. Skill Ripjaws V 16gb (2x 8gb) - $179.99
SSD - Samsung EVO 500gb - $101.99
GPU - MSI 1060 6gb - reusing
Cooler Master Case - reusing
550w PSU - reusing

So, I am planning on reusing my GPU, PSU and case - upgrading MB, CPU, RAM, SSD and cooler for around $660. End goal is upgrading from 60hz to 144hz monitor and actually making use of that with the above setup.

I currently run most of my games on high, hitting anywhere between 40-60 fps, depending, and certainly lower at times. I figure if I move up to a 1080 or so a year from now, the rest of my rig may be ok? I know I'll likely need a new PSU then, but that is down the line.

Playing mostly Destiny, BF, GTA V, PUB G, GR, TW3, RL and a few other random games. Again, appreciate the input.

your current cooler is good enough, (unless you are overclocking idk why you wouldnt go for liquid cooling)
also, psu looks fine if you plan on keeping cpu on stock speed.

If your current setup i5-2310/MSI 1060 6gb gives you 40-60fps, then you can expect upgrade to i5-8600K/MSI 1060 6gb give you ~ 30% performance increase in cpu limited titles. From 40-60fps you'd get 50-80fps.
If your target is 144fps, then GPU upgrade is necessary also.

BTW - what's the PSU model name?

XFX TS Series P1550SXXB9 550W

So basically I’m spending $650 for a 30 FPS max increase.

And in other words , until I upgrade my GPU as well, I won’t get the most out of that rig?

Which I pretty knew. Idk I guess I thought I’d get more out of a cpu upgrade.
