My USB won't boot

I just built my first computer and am trying to install ubuntu. I try to boot it from a USB drive, but it fails to boot from there, this is the only category I could find that relates, my current is is vista

did you extract the ISO to the flash drive or just copy it? you'd need to extract it.
did you set the bios to boot off of the usb? (is it on the top of the list)
