Hey there, MMKRISHNA!

I'm very sorry to hear about your WD external drive.
I'd suggest you to run Data LifeGuard Diagnostics tool on it, so that we check up on what's the health and SMART status of the drive.

I recommend to pass the extended test as well as the quick one.

Unfortunately the I/O error might indicate that we are dealing with a faulty hardware.
I'd still try to plug the HDD with a different USB cable and on another computer.
Re-installing the drivers in Device Manager (Devices & Printers) might also help. Simply go under USB controllers and uninstall all your drivers there by right-clicking on them. Afterwards, reboot your system and wait until Windows updates the drivers.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted!

I'll stop short of removing that link as Commercial Spam but will add a warning to anyone visiting the site. The advice may be sound but some of the products you are encouraged to download or buy may not be.

Download a Linux operating system and burn it to a CD. Run that live from the CD in your computer and it won't impact on, or harm your Windows system at all. It will, however, give you access to the hard disk and it might be able to mount it when Windows cannot.

PCLinuxOS from the dotcom site of the same name will do the trick.

Hi again, MMKRISHNA!

I'm sorry that the troubleshooting didn't work for you, you should try the guys' suggestions above and hopefully you will be able to recover your data. However, if your WD drive is still under warranty (you can check that here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=PlGz0Q ), you should get in touch with our tech support and send out an RMA request. You should be able to get a replacement. :)
