My laptop is on the wifi and it works fine when no one is using the computer downstairs, but as soon as someone gets on and I'm in the middle of doing something, I have to boot them off to get my stuff done. My laptop is prob 5 years old or so.

It could be that your laptop's wireless adapter is not what it once was.

Try temporarily moving downstairs and test closer to the router. Move further and further away and watch the connection/performance.

Could also be a bandwidth issue. Especially if booting off other devices restores service....

As for the router, Time Warner provided it but someone there should be managing it: i.e., setting up the wireless network name, the password, the encryption etc.. If not you may have an unsecured network and your wireless bandwidth might be being used by someone else.
Is the laptop dropped from the network or is just the network performance is slowed down?

Is the computer downstairs wired or wireless?

Any error messages when you lose network connectivity if that is the case?

What about other wireless devices?

Who manages the home network and router? The router may have some log entries that could help identify the problem.
