My win 7 and win 8.1 pc do not recognise each other

HELLO EVERYONE.. Yesterday i wanted to share a file from my win 7 laptop to my win 8.1 pc via a lan wire but neither my pc nor my laptop recognise each other ...I am not able to share the file... PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

Are you hooking them up to each other directly with an ethernet cable? Because if you are you can't do it with a regular patch cable, you'd need a crossover cable.

If you're going through a router, then make sure you enable it so that computers can share and made discoverable in the Network and Sharing Centre of both these laptops.
