Hey Sylvia. It is important for me to know if the HDD died or the laptop had another problem in order to determine how to proceed with the data recovery. What happened with the laptop?
If the drive is OK you can take it out of the laptop and connect it to another computer either internally (via a SATA connection) or externally (by using SATA to USB cable, external enclosure or an HDD docking station). If the drive's OK you should be able to see the drive in Windows Explorer like a normal drive or you might have to assign the drive a new letter before that in order to be able to see it. Here's how to do that: How to change the drive letter assignment in Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP or 2000.

On the other hand, if the drive is not OK, connect it again to another computer and try accessing it via Linux Live USB/CD to see if you are able to get to your data this way and get it out of the drive. If that doesn't work and the drive is still not recognized, then you could try some of the data recovery options listed in this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
