My wireless connection in college dorm is having issues on only my laptop.

The network in my dorm is very high speed, but when I play games the internet feels like it just stops working. All the characters in online games will just run forward and after a few seconds my game will catch up. This is extremely frustrating and I have tried what feels like everything. Also, as a side note, there is a port in my wall that connects to the network via Ethernet. My laptop will not connect to it yet my roommate's does. I understand this might be a seperate issue but both are bothering me. Thanks!

The problem with dorm Internet is that it is shared by many people. Given the load, having it be either slow or inconsistent is to be expected, especially on the wireless side.

It's strange that your machine won't work with the wired Ethernet outlet but your roommate's does. I'd concentrate on this. Try it at the library, or campus tech support. It may simply be that you have to make a configuration change. If you can wire it, and that eliminates the problem, that's great. On the other hand, even if the dorm has a 1 GB/sec connection, if 100 students are using it that doesn't leave you much.

Thanks for the reply! I forgot to mention that my roommate who also plays games has no issues whatsoever with the internet. Not only does it run near prisine wireless, but he also can connect via Ethernet with no issues.

I did suggest that figure out why your wired connection doesn't work and testing it with that. I can think of two explanations for the difference in wireless performance
1) Your roommate's PC and yours use different wireless versions, or bands
2) Your PC is in bad shape overall. If you get the wired connection to work, you can test for this case.

Ok, I'll focus on getting this ethernet to work. Although I find it strange that my laptop wireless connection only stutters at my dorm. I've tested this on other networks and my laptops runs games fine. Do you have any suggestions for working on the ethernet problem? My laptop registers that there is an ethernet cable but keeps saying, "Unidentified network no internet."
