Hi,

I have a Netgear WNA3100 Wireless Network Adapter, and I built a new PC last month, ever since then I've had an issue whereby my network adapter randomly disconnects itself from my computer. It seems to do this without fail when under heavy-load, i.e when I'm downloading a really large file or streaming a HD video on YouTube.

It gives me the windows notification sound that a USB device has been unplugged, and the icon in the toolbar turns into a little red cross. I have checked the driver and it is up to date with the Netgear driver version 5.100.68.57. My OS is Windows 8.1 Pro Preview build 9431. I had the same issue on standard windows 8 Pro, so the 8.1 update is not the cause.

Also, if I unplug the USB device and reconnect it, it instantly fixes the issue until the next time I try to download a large file. If i keep disconnecting and reconnecting it physically by hand, it shuts off all of my USB ports for a few seconds and reboots them all.

I have also checked to make sure that the option for windows to disable the device to save power is not checked, so it isn't that either.

I used the same adapter for over a year without any issues, until I upgraded my PC. The power supply is not the problem as I have had the issue with two separate power supplies which I know both work perfectly.

I have no idea what else it could be that is causing this, and really can't afford to throw money at it until it goes away, so I'm asking here, I hope you guys can help as I'm actually scared to watch videos, patch games or just download anything.

It's an external USB 802.11b/g/n adapter, and yes, I have tried it in every USB port and it does the same thing. Even in the USB 3.0 ports.

Try uninstalling the netgear driver and let windows install the default windows drivers.

I tried this many times and sadly it did not work.

I also have this problem with my D-Link Wireless AC1200 USB Adapter. Previously, the same issue occurred with my my TP-LINK USB Adapter. I have tried changing the Power Options and the Power Management Settings (under Device Management) and nothing has worked. I would love for some help on this issue as well! :)

I get the same exact issue. Everything was fine on Windows 8 but ever since the update to 8.1 it's been dropping like crazy. If i put it under some serious load it will nearly always disconnect, but sometimes even with no load it does the same thing. The only to fix it is to unplug the adapter and plug it back in.

I get this issue with both my Netgear WNDA4100 running the default windows drivers, the Windows 8 Netgear drivers and the Windows 8.1 Netgear beta drivers. I also get it my spare Asus AC53 adapter.

No solution at this time. I have a D-Link AC1200 USB Wi-Fi adapter and I'm experiencing a much similar problem. The system is a desktop PC running Windows 8.1, this started after updating from 8.0 to 8.1. The only solution has been to unplug, then plug in the USB adapter back in. It connects, obtains an IP address, then as soon as I put a load on the connection it drops reporting "no wireless network found", other devices are connected including Win7 & 8.1 on several notebooks, android & iOS devices, Xbox 360, PS3, BluRay etc. with internal NIC's, but they demonstrate no apparent problems. I've tried updated drivers, MS drivers, different USB ports, 2.0 & 3.0, disabled Firewall & AV, QOS settings with no improvement. Any suggestions welcome

I know this thread is little old but I am currently experiencing this issue with my Netgear WNA3100 N300 USB adapter running Windows 10. I notice some improvement when I go to Device Manager - Adapter Properties - Power Management tab and uncheck the Allow the computer to turn this device off to save power option. After I did this, it would happen but less often.

I also went into Advanced Power Settings found in Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings. switched the plan to use a High Performance power plan and adjusted Wireless Adapter Power Savings Mode to Maximum Performance. Also there is a settings to Disable USB Selective Suspend. Click OK and no longer an issue.

Hope this works for anyone else who stumbles on this thread.

Hi thanks for the advice, I just tried it, and will test it out for some time, and if I remember, I will update you guys to see if it worked for me.

Just tried it,but it didn't work for me

Go to your Device Manager/ Human Interface Devices/ USB Input Device. Right click, then select Properties/ Power Management: Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Try checking those off too for each of your USB Input Devices. GL

Same as the last answer but instead of just doing it for the USB Input Devices do it for the network adapters. I had the same problem and when I checked my network adapter in device manager the power settings were set to let the computer turn it off to save power.

Friend, this is one of those times where you've helped. I stumbled across this thread in desperation - this seems to have fixed it, at least for now. Didn't want you go to unthanked. THANK YOU.
