if you read the freenas forums they are very strongly of the opinion that you need ECC ram (and therefore an ECC capable system), ideally 1Gb per Tb of storage. It holds information about the files on disks in RAM hence being robust to errors is useful.

Why not just windows and storage spaces.

That's plenty.
For a home NAS even a Celeron CPU will do.
I just built a 16TB NAS with a ASRock D1800B-ITX with an integrated Intel Celeron J1800 (2.41 GHz)
4GB of RAM and a 60GB SSD.
I just added a 4-port PCI-e SATA III Controller Card.
