N Wireless Adapter Won't Find 5GHz Band

Hey everyone. Just got a new router which is distributing the 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals. My laptop has a 802.11n network card according to Command Prompt (Atheros AR5B97). The laptop however fails to find the 5GHz signal even thought it is supposedly an N card.

I tried updating the driver through the standard Windows auto update on Device Manager and it said it is the latest version even though it is dating to 2010. I tried downloading and manually installing drivers from here - other forum posts said that it could work but it appears to only give me a BSoD, whether I'm installing it wrong, I don't know.

Also, when I go to the Network and Sharing Centre, click the connection I am currently on (the 2.4), and click Status and Properties and Enable Atheros Connection Settings, the option to enable 5GHz band is ghosted out.

Can anyone help me please?

Just because your laptop's network card supports the N standard doesn't automatically mean it supports the 5 GHz spectrum. Some cheaper network cards are single band and only run on the 2.4GHz standard. If this is the case you can pick up 2.4 GHz N but will not be able to see 5 GHz.

Hmmm okay thanks. I tried looking around for other internal wireless cards but it seems near impossible to buy a replacement. Is that so? Or am I looking in all the wrong places?

Chances are you won't be able to get a replacement wifi card for your laptop. You can try to search for mini pcie cards. That is most likely what your card would be if it isn't built into the motherboard.

Faced similar problem with my sony vaio s series ( wireless card - Intel centrino advanced - N 6235) . Did the following and the latptop was able to see the 5GHZ band network : Goto Control Panel - Hardware - Device Manager - Network adapters . Goto properties of your wireless card - Advanced - scroll down to wireless mode and change Value to 6. 802.11 a/b/g. Mine was at 4. 802.11 b/g by default.
