OK, I cheated. I am a woman, I am busty, but I am not naked. :)

I had to fib about the nakedness so that I wouldnt get overlooked as your basic "Oh, please help me" post. :)

I am a woman who used to be quite computer literate and for many years I kept a detailed list of what I was going to put into "MY DREAM COMPUTER" someday. That list hasnt been updated in over 5-6 years.............

Unfortunately, about 4-5 years ago, my SUV accelerated on its own, going up to about 100 mph, & then flipping over 7-8X when I hit the brakes. Why do I mention that at all? Because, without going into detail, I now have a problem retaining info. and with problem solving. (serious brain & back injuries) After years of people telling me how smart I was, now I have people looking at me funny when I can't remember something they told me 5 minutes ago. 🙁

Well, after a very nasty divorce & the selling of our home (husband couldnt tolerate me not remembering how he liked his eggs cooked) I find myself, FINALLY, with about $3,0000-$3,500 to spend on a nice computer and monitor. ($4,000 if I have to go that high)

I am asking you for recommendations on this because with the computer I have now (very old, freezes & then crashes, slow 28.8 modem) I cannot do the necessary research to catch up on things. (will be going to cable modem when I move to another home soon)

I realized I needed to come back here to Toms when I saw some mention of 2 graphic cards & something called SLI. Since when do you need 2 graphic cards? Remember I am technically "out of it" for 5-6 years.......I have no clue what is "up & coming" and what runs well.

If someone feels like taking the time (& I appreciate it if you can) I am looking for a system with a 19 inch & up LCD that is bordering on "overkill". I have a son who is heavy into gaming, a daughter who loves to spend time on the internet, & we all do various word processing tasks, etc... also-I don't want to buy a system again for a long time as I've waited a long time for this one, OBVIOUSLY.

I want enough memory to sound ridiculous, a monitor that looks beautiful, can handle some fast gaming & maybe could double as television, & obviously a system that's very stable/dependable because I'm no longer able to "troubleshoot" like I used to.

I remember all of you as being practically brilliant when it comes to computers so I'm sure that many of your "dream computer lists" would do just fine. If you could point me to what you would put together if it was your choice I'd just love it. I'm so far behind now-when I last compared a 40 gig hard drive was more than sufficient-cant believe what I see now!

I want you to know I only gave all the above detail because I dont want you to think I'm too lazy to do the research necessary to come up w/my own conclusions. I just really need your input. My kids & I have put up with "horrendous, old, unreliable computers" for many years- this is the BIG ONE for us, the computer that hopefully will make us drool in anticipation. I know you all can steer me in the right direction as far as what to order.......where to order it from is another question, for another time, I guess.

THANK YOU SO MUCH :)

You need two graphics cards in order to see those big beutiful busty breasts in 3D! Pics please 😉
As I was saying, you probably do not need SLI

So I got me a pen and paper And I made up my own little sign

Sorry these boobs are so big I cant provide pics unless you paste two pictures together-lol...........

What the heck is this w/2 cards now??? Do you actually purchase 2 good graphics cards & put them in?

All I know is that I want the system to be so close to the "best you can get at the moment" that you hopefully wont have to upgrade for a long time after that" even though computers become "outdated" when you first get them.

Skip dual video cards, and go for the nVidia 7800GTX...The fastest current card for a little more than $400 on the market.

on the other hand... two video SLI cards with two displays I should be able to view them nicely! [/url]

I think I get it now Rich. One graphic card per breast would be best, correct - LOL......

At the risk of sounding bitter, even though I have a very decent D cup rack my EX, EX , EX, EX, HUSBAND (did I stress the EX enough?) found it much more interesing to pretend he was going to look up "aliens, ufos, moon, etc." in the evening only to find he'd spent the evening typing in "XXX, porn, and xxal to the search engines.

I told them we now had the internet on our computer & he could look up anything in the whole universe and this is what he looked up....... I know every male on this site is saying "So, whats her problem....."

Anyway...........

If you wanted the Best Value on an Awesome Video Card what would you pick- :)

There's no point in buying the best of the best in some hope that it will last a long time. The computer system is outdated so quickly that you might as well get the best system that you'll actually use at the moment and then upgrade sooner with the ton of money you'll save.

With that said, if you want to spoil your kids buy the best video card out there. Get a nice 20"+ LCD and change the way you look at computers from now on.

With your budget you can do anything you want. What I'm proposing is that you spend half your budget (depending on what kind of monitor you want to get), still get an amazing machine, and spend the other half a little bit sooner than you otherwise might have. Computers aren't as expensive anymore so nowadays you don't spend $3000 for a computer, you spend $1000 for a computer and $3000 for a top of the line computer with all the bells and whistles.

If you want to play games, get 2GB of memory and the 7800gtx. With your budget you can splurge on the card and I would if I were you.

For monitors I'm partial to the Dell LCD's since you get a lot of bang for your buck. Check out bensbargains.net and look for deals on the 2005fpw (20.1") and 2405fpw (24"). I have owned both and recommend them. Especially the 24"er which you can get for around $900.

Get a DVD burner. They're cheap. They can read, write, and re-write both CD's and DVD's. I like the Lite-on drives.

I like Western Digital hard drives. If you plan on downloading software, movies, music etc off the web get a huge drive. They fill up quick. If you're good at burning backups on a regular basis you might be able to get something smaller. If you plan on storing home movies and pictures the same will apply.

Now I might have missed it, but do you want to build the machine, buy the parts and have someone else build it, or have it prebuilt and sent to your house? If you're buying parts I recommend newegg.com and monarchcomputer.com. I'm not sure what kind of building option they have but if worst came to worst you could buy the parts and bring them to your local mom and pop computer store for them to build it. Wouldn't cost too much for that service and would save you the headache if you don't want to learn how to do it yourself (which isn't very hard but can be a bit nerve racking).

Thank you-thats the kind of detailed info. that I was looking for.

I agree extra money should go to the monitor. I've always drooled over those big old lcd's. What do you think of Samsungs quality?? A few years back I'd been looking at the 190T & was thinking of that same line, maybe like you suggested the 20 inch, although I do hear over & over that Dell makes good monitors.

I would have to order it through someone. Any computer shops you especially like or should I simply check & see who's doing well at resellerratings.com?

Thanks very much again for the detailed response. I much appreciate it.

Barb-
Btw-I do know the computers go out of date once you get them in the car-I just wanted to express that I would rather spend more & get the best I could for now rather than hold back and want a new one a few months from now. I wish that technology would take a BREATHER once in awhile so you could at least feel like you're keeping up right!

The two I listed above are the ones I use (newegg and monarch). It looks like Monarch builds computers too. I have no experience with Samsung monitors so I can't help you there.

Sorry-I thought you listed those two as shops to use if you were buying parts & building it.

Thanks again for the help....

I just saw a review of ASUS's 7800GTX, and the reviewers (my apologies, I can't remember where I saw the article. May have been off of Hard OCP) said that Asus's card had the highest benchmarks of any 7800 on the market right now. Looks like they overclocked even more than BFG.

As far as processors, AMD is your best bet if this is going to be primarily a gaming machine.

Before building the system in my sig, I spent 3-4 weeks researching parts on various sites (except for the Motherboard; only micro-atx Socket 939 with a PCI-e slot that I could find). Corsair is always a good choice for RAM, although Ballistix and OCZ have some very nice products as well.

Aspire X-qpack case
MSI rs-480m2-il Mobo
AMD 3500+ with the Venice core
1 GB Corsair XMS ram, pc2300 2-3-3-6
BFG 6800 GT OC
Zalmann 7700cu Cooler

I read your initial post and I am convinced you're a brilliant communicator. Have you ever considered a position such as VP Marketing? You're a much smarter person than I think you would have us believe. And I mean this in a complementary way.....

Now, after you have considered all the technical advice from the posters, I ask you to consider one other:

get a computer for each family member. From experience, you're gonna stress-out your loved ones by timesharing. But again, I think you're a much smarter person than we can conceive only by reading your posts. You probably have some ideas on this issue.

You could buy 3 fantastic computers (each suitable for gaming even), 2 19" CRT monitors (philips or something), and one 21" LCD for $3500 imo. I know you're kidding, but I have a feeling you could get someone to build them for you 😉

Hi Barb.

Let me see if I cn give you some advise.

Now you said you have a gamer in the family. THat means you want to go with an AMD CPU now. They have the higher performace, especially in games, at the moment. I would probably recommend one of the new AMD 64 X2. That is a dual core cpu, that means you almost get two for one. Now, that does not mean double the performance, but you do get a nice boost when you have multiple things open at one.

A motherboard. I would go with one from MSI or ASUS. I have always had really good luck with them. I would get one based on the nVidia SLI chipset. Great performance, with upgradability.

RAM. I would go with one of the major brands, corsair, mushkin, OCZ..
Best RAM and it usually does not fail.

Video Card.. Have some play here. There are TONS of them on the market. Most people here would be preferential to nVidia. As would I.
I would say the 7800GT. THis will give you the power to play any game you want today. AND, you can add another down the road for an added boost, via SLI. SLI is an upgrade option to use two cards to do your video processing. Like the AMD X2, you don't get double the performance, but you do get a nice boost.

Hard drive... Some will recommend the WD Raptor series. I have not seen the performance for the price you pay for the drive. I would reccommend a 400GB or so Western Digital SATA drive.

THe rest.. Too many options to list.

Hope this is helpfull. If you want, you can drop me a PM and I would be happy to help you look through Newegg for specific products.

Another reason for not to drive SUVs.

What? 8O !! Couldn't he write it down for ya? Something tells me newegg.com will realte to your story

Sounds like Mr. Right descriptions. I suggest you go to here (click) and read some. There are quite a few samples of good computers and resellers info.

You can not be serious. If it was a guy(?) saying this crap he would have been moderated by now. Poor bullshiter guy.

Anyway..... I will take the time to explain everything you need to know and a computer setup for your gamer son and internet loving daughter.
SLI (Scalable Link Interface) Is A configuration of 2 Video cards. Why? 2 reasons Increased performance during games, and so that you can have 2-4 moniters hoked up to one computer.
28.8 Modems are extremely old and outdated. If you are forced to use a phone line you should get a 56k modem. If you have a cable or DSL provider in you area I recommend upgrading. Why upgrade to cable or DSL? Well if your son is gaming he can play online with all of his freinds from school, play with friends he meets online without having anyproblems. And for your daughter who is always on the internet, She can browse the internet faster, Loading alot of pictures will no longer take 1 hour. She can chat and exchange pictures live video with her friends.
Now on to the exciting part! Your computer specs. I will also give reasons as to why i have chosen these parts.

CPU: AMD FX-60
I chose the FX-60 because its the cutting edge in Dual core technology. It can handle anything you thow at it. It'll do the extreme gaming that your son needs. As for your daughter this is more than enough.

Optical Drive: Sony DVD-RW Burner
Burns all optical media. This is good beacuse if your daughter wants to burn music CD's or Video DVD's it will burn then fast.

Video Card: XFX GeForce 7800GTX
This card is able to handle every game on the market, so your son will be able to play all the games he wants.

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar 250GB
This hard drive will be able to store all of your sons games and everything you and your daughter do as well. You will be able to store Movie's that you record off the TV.

Mobo: ASUS A8n32-SLI Deluxe
Awsome Motherboard Not much to say as it is the backbone for the rest of your components.

RAM: OCZ Gold GX 4x1GB
This RAM is very fast, awsome for gaming and 4GB is as much RAM as systems can allocate. Meaning you cant have any more. This is also a ridiculous amount 😛

PSU: Antec TP2 550Watt
Great power supply able to power your computer and with enough power left over to power a second video card if you decide to get one.

Video IN: KWORLD VS-TVMP2RF
This device will allow your computer to recive cable broadcasting. So basically you will be able to watch TV on your computer and record whatever shows/movies you want.

Operating System: Windows Media Center
Not much to say about an operating system excpet its the latest out....

Moniter: Acer AL2416Wd Silver 24" 6ms
This huge 24 inch moniter is also Widescreen, so you will be able to watch all your favorite movies in widescreen, or normal 4:3. Max resolution is 1920x1200. Picture here http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.asp?image=24-009-061-02.jpg&CurImage=24-009-061-02.jpg&Description=Acer%20AL2416Wd%20Silver%2024%22%206ms%20gray-to-gray%20Widescreen%20LCD%20Monitor%20-%20Retail

Over the system comes to a total of..... $3,551.97

Overall this is a great Gaming computer for you son.
For your daughter she will be able to multi-task, bwose internet, download music, video, and anything else. For you, this computer will do everything u need it to.
Also Since the specs of this computer are so high there wont be a need to upgrade for a long time.

Bottom Line.... This Comp kicks ass (and i wish i could afford one!)

I also can not stress enough to upgrade to cable or DSL. HUGE improvement of internet capabilities. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me or just make a post.
If you need some one with experience to build the comp for you you can PM me and i'll give you info. I live right next to you if your in NJ as your name says.
