Hey,

We've got a NAS from Medion, MD 86729. We bought it in a store in the Netherlands (Aldi) around 2 to 3 years ago. We never had problems with it in the first few months but then the issues started. Every time we wanted to access the NAS we had to reset it, turn it off and on and it would work perfectly again. Recently it dropped to trying 10/15 times, resetting it etcetera before we can access it. The case also shows us a red light from time to time and the manual indicates that this would show if there is a hardware error. I literally got no knowledge about NAS servers, only how to put stuff on there and how to access it but that's it. Is there any way to fix this or does it mean that the HDD that is in there is slowly dying and we have to buy a new one?

Hi Mike.
I have the same NAS, same issue. Freezing movies, the need to restart to get access to the beginning of that specific movie. Finally broken uploads to the NAS and at last. no file-access at all.
Over the webinterface I ckecked several things. No harming things. I changed setting omn router port to force connection @ full or @half duplex, automatic negatiation, 100GBps, changed the data cable between TV and router, the NAS and router. The firmware of the NAS was the same as at the time I bought te appliance (made screendumps that time). Suddenly, the NAS was not accessible anyway, whilst the drive was booting and running and the blue LED kept blinking on and of 1/sec.

I'm thinking the same thing. Since it became really difficult to access it, it would most likely be the HDD. I don't see a reason why to open it and buy a new HDD since we never had a normal day with this thing, always had to reset it. Buying a new NAS is the best option?

I would look at a Synology products, quick and easy to use.

After days of use and trouble shooting finally, I did a complete reset of all passwords (10 sec / double beep, by pushing the reset button). The NAS started, blinking problem solved. I could not ping the NAS (find it in the network, still). Decided to open-up teh case. I disassemled and tested the HDD. Contained a Seagate STD3000. On the drive I found -using a Linux GParted bootdisk, so my notebook run Linux that moment- two partitions on the disk with Gparted software. BUT: one partition Linux EXT2 ca.487MiB, no data visible. The other partition (2,73GiB, was reserved for data, XFS-formatted. Here also, was no data visible. The boot software GParted suggested: No files accessible maybe no system software available. B.t.w.: The drive does not show up any physical/hardware damage.

Today I contacted Medion Service NL. Technician is a professional, correct level of approaching the problem and solutions, so far.
My suggestion is that the firmware is corrupted somhow and I asked them to support me with a firmware file (.img-file?) to re-install the firmware over the USB-port. I need f/w 1.01UZD (to support both cores of the processor). Re-install should not harm any user-files on th HDD. In the mean time, I will have to created a disk-copy (inmage) to a new HDD, as a back-up, just in case
I do not know how else to be capable to get access to my valuable files, foto/film ever. Medion just replaces spare parts, they do not recover...

I hope they can provide the firm-/software to me -awaiting Medion's reaction next week- .

N.B. Red light according to the manual is indeed a hardware failure. But with my info up here, you may get a chanche to get some help yourself.
Someone suggested, the NAS has a lag of cooling in fool operation, I am not sure.

Mike, Lots of Succes.
John (If anybody as suggestions about the total of issues, pleasa do not hasitate.... my mail alarm will wake me up when you reply ;-) )
